Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
By: Mildred Taylor
This 1977 Newberry Award winning book tells the story of a young girl growing up in rural Mississippi during the Great Depression and expected to abide by Jim Crow Laws. The Logans, a family of landowners, are prideful and determined to hang onto the farm that has been in the family since slavery ended. This however, is not an easy task. Tension between the poor sharecroppers and the local wealthy landowners, business owners, and night riders increases. Cassie and her three brothers soon learn about racial injustice and the unfair treatment of blacks in Southern Mississippi.
